6th Grade Caring for Kids
The 6th grade course in Family & Consumer Science centers on providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to do babysitting. We discuss safety, the importance of reading to children, ways children benefit from play, and nutritional needs of young children. Clothing and
Textiles Students will be introduced to the sewing machine. They will learn parts of the machine and how to use it properly. In sixth grade, students construct two projects: bean bags and a drawstring bag which they may use for gym clothes. Foods and
Nutrition Students will learn names and uses for common kitchen equipment. They will also learn to identify
safety hazards in the kitchen.
The main nutritional focus for sixth grade is the New Food Guide
Pyramid and proper serving sizes.
Students will complete a variety of basic recipes in groups of three
or four. |

7th Grade Family Living The 7th grade course in Family & Consumer Science centers on family living. We discuss the role of the family, different family structures, the life cycle of the family and even put together a family album as the main class project. Clothing and Textiles Students will review parts of the sewing machine and be quizzed on the proper use of the machine. Each seventh grade student chooses his/her project from many options of cartoon pillow kits. They will learn new skills such as how to sew on a button and how to hand sew. Foods and Nutrition Students will review common
pieces of kitchen equipment and be introduced to some new pieces as
well. This year, students will
focus on proper sanitation and food-borne illness. The
importance of breakfast is also stressed this year and students will complete
a breakfast unit with the opportunity to make some common breakfast menu
items. Students will still
complete recipes in groups of three or four and will also be required to
complete a meal at home for a grade as well. |

8th Grade Consumer and Resource Management The 8th grade course in Family & Consumer Science centers on Consumer Education. Students will learn about their role as a consumer and how the advertising world can influence their buying decisions. They will also become familiar with the consumer rights and responsibilities. Clothing and Textiles Students will have a brief review of the sewing machine and how it works. This year, students will choose their very own project to complete in class. They may choose from various stuffed animals or they may construct a canvas duffle bag with a zipper. Foods and Nutrition The focus for students this year will be on principles of baking. Students will get to perform some experiments to see the difference between baking soda and baking powder and how yeast works. Students will become experts on determining what can go wrong during the baking process. Students will still complete recipes in groups of three or four and will also be required to complete a meal at home for a grade as well. |
