SCHOOL
Kissing Hand
![]()
It's my first day of school
And "The Kissing Hand" is what we read.
It's about a raccoon
Who did just as his parents said.
Like the raccoon's first day at school
I was scared and a little shy.
But because of what you said
I was brave and I got by.
All through the year
I'll make more things for you.
So as I change and as I learn
You can see my growth, too!
Kissing Hand Poem~~
A piece of me I give to you,
This special heart because
"I love you."
The heart is you, the hand is me,
It shows that we are
A Family.
Kissing Hand
This special heart I give to you, Because you love me …
And I love you.
The heart is you, the hand is me,
It shows we are
A family!
A piece of me I give to you,
This special heart because
I Love You!
The heart is you, the hand is me
It shows that we are
A family!

Raccoon Song
( sung to the tune of Kookaberra)
Raccoon sleeps in a hollow tree
While the sun shines on you and me.
Sleep, little raccoon,
Sleep, little raccoon,
Warm and cozily.
In the darkest part of night
Raccoon has the best eyesight.
Look, little raccoon,
Look, little raccoon,
My, your eyes are bright.
Raccoon hardly makes a sound
When he prowls all around.
Hunt, little raccoon,
Hunt, little raccoon,
Find food on the ground.

School
By Winifred C. Marshall
School bells are ringing,
Loud and clear;
Vacation’s over, school is here.
We hunt our pencils and our books,
And say goodby to fields and brooks,
To carefree days of sunny hours,
To birds and butterflies and flowers.
But we are glad school has begun.
For work is always mixed with fun.
When autumn comes and the weather is cool,
Nothing can take the place of school.
NOW THAT I CAN READ
By Ruth Etkin
I used to need somebody
To sit and read to me.
I’d look at every page they read
And listen carefully.
But now that I am in first grade,
I’m filling up the shelf
With stories, poems, and other books
That I can read myself.
Learning Together in First Grade
By Barbara Gruber & Sue Gruber
First grade is a special place,
See the big smile on my face.
Games to play and songs to sing,
We learn about everything.
Pencils, papers, books to read,
We have everything we need.
So much to learn, so much to do,
We must listen to you-know-who.
Our class is a busy bunch,
Look- it’s almost time for lunch!
We know all the ABC’s,
Right down to the XYZ’s.
Reading, writing, spelling too,
We even know two plus two.
We learn together all year,
Second grade will soon be here!
There’s time for work, time for play,
Learning new things every day.
First grade is a special place,
See the big smile on my face.

“DREAMS”
by Mrs. Arnold
Dreams are fairies dancing in the sky
Dreams are stars twinkling up high
Dreams are raindrops that glisten and fall
Dreams are trees that grow so tall
Dreams are flowers that brighten up each day
Dreams are clouds that float around and play
Dreams are rainbows that dance inside my head
Dreams are the journeys I take when I lie in bed
Dreams are places I’m yearning to see
Dreams are the any things I’m waiting to be
Dreams are the sunrays in a child’s smile
Dreams are carried on butterfly wings mile after mile
Dreams are the love lights inside you and me
Dreams are the fireflies lighting our way to see
Dreams are the music and songs inside your heart
Dreams are the dances that make your journey start
Dreams are the wishes you hold inside
Dreams are the adventures you’re ready to find
So follow your dreams wherever they lead
Start with a book and begin to READ!
Books to the Ceiling
Arnold Lobel
Books to the ceiling, books to the sky,
My piles of books are a mile high.
How I love them!
How I need them.
I’ll have a long beard by the time I read them.
WORDS
by Glenny Merillat, Plymouth, MI
It's easy to be kind when your life seems more like play
We gladly find the special words to brighten someone's day.
But, if we're sad or angry and life doesn't seem worthwhile
Unkind words can slip right out and take away a smile.
Bucketfillers always try to watch what they say
They want to fill buckets with loving kindness every day.
And when they do, they find that life looks bright once more
Because what you give comes back to you like waves upon the shore.
