Daily Language Practice (DLP) is completed with each story in our reading series. This reviews editing and proofreading skills as well as skills that revolve around Pennsylvania Standards. Our Grammar and Practice Workbooks also supplement the English curriculum.
Our ultimate goals for students are to comprehend what they are reading and have a healthy attitude toward reading. We are not a whole language school, but we do use some techniques that resemble an integrated approach of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in language arts through the following things:
- Harcourt Reading Series
- Language Activity Books
- Trade books and “Paperback Plus” books
- Reading Response Journals
- Reading Skill and Strategy Development that correlate with Pennsylvania Standards
The writing process is reviewed and followed for each writing assignment during writing workshop. Analytical scoring traits are used to grade and assess student’s work. The emphasis is on content, organization, sentence structure, grammar and spelling.
Spelling words come from the reading series and Rebecca Sitton’s Spelling Sourcebook, and it is not just for Fridays anymore. Although your child does take a spelling test on Fridays, we believe that the true gauge of spelling is in their accuracy in their writing. Memorizing spelling words does not guarantee accuracy in everyday writing. Our expectations for students include:
- Use of correct spelling in daily work
- Use of appropriate spelling strategies
- Apply spelling generalities such as word patterns and phonics rules
- Proofread and make decisions about spelling corrections
- Publish error free pieces of writing
- Be accountable for an increasing number of mastered words, high frequency words, and content area words
- Be responsible for a weekly list of words that are on a 2nd grade level
