Mrs. Petrella's 5th Grade

WELCOME 2011-2012 Superstars!

 Do plan to purchase:

-notebooks, preferably 1 for each of the 4 subjects: math, reading, social studies, and science

-folders, 1 colored folder (with pockets) for each of the 4 subjects

  red-language arts

   blue-math

  green-science

  yellow-social studies

organizational idea: match your subject notebook color to your subject folder color!

-#2 pencils

-erasers

-small pack of markers (no more than 12 necessary!)

-highlighters (1 needed, no more than 4 necessary!)

OPTIONAL:

-scissors*

-book covers

-colored pencils*

-small (3-5 oz) bottle of hand sanitizer with a cap--no pump bottles please!

-flash drive to carry projects to and from school.

Do NOT purchase:

-calculators*

-glue sticks*

-pencil sharpeners*

-rulers*

-trapper keeper or big binder: we will be using folders and working on simplistic organization in 5th grade.  There is no need for a big binder/trapperkeeper styled mechanism.  We have found that these types of organizers often encourage the hording of older papers which adds to confusion and misfiled papers.  Further, there is simply not enough room for such binders to be kept in the school desks.

I hope you are looking forward to starting a fantastic year.  I cannot wait to meet you and am filled with an excitement of new beginnings and endless possibilities.  Please show up with a smile on Tuesday!

Mrs. Petrella-5th Grade, Room 201

 My Goals for this Year:

1.     To provide a challenging standards-based education for students so that they are well rounded students who not only have knowledge of how they best learn,  but are also prepared for the PSSA test in the spring and Middle School in the Fall of 2012

2.     To encourage the asking of questions, age-appropriate behavior, and ownership/responsibility of learning

3.     For the children to realize that learning is fun, comes in many forms, and is life long

  Odds and Ends

Snacks

Lunch is served at 12:55 every day.  Because of this later time, the students may bring in a small, NUT FREE healthy snack (no candy or sugared drinks please!!)

*Please provide your son/daughter with a small, capped bottle of hand sanitizer to keep inside his/her desk.  I’ve noticed that this helps keep the passing of germs down throughout the year.

Classroom Supplies

We are always in need of more classroom supplies!  Any donation is appreciated.

Tissues!!!

Hand Sanitizer

Small treats/prizes for the "Treat Basket"

Anti-bacterial wipes (like clorox, lysol, or any generic brand)

Clear Communication

Never hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.  The quickest and easiest way for me to communicate with you is through email.  My email address is: epetrella@eastpennsd.org.  I check my email once or twice throughout the school day and will respond back to you as soon as I can.
