Reading Seminar

Welcome! You have chosen to be part of a learning community dedicated to improving your reading, comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills! It will be your job and responsibility to come to class prepared and to work hard to become active and engaged learners.

Components of Reading Seminar

We will begin the year discussing the definition of reading and why we should work hard to imporve our reading skills. You will be responsible for choosing an independent reading book, bringing it to class everyday, and reading on a daily basis - sometimes in class, but mostly on your own time. We will learn reading strategies throughout the year that will improve our reading skills in all curriculum areas. In addition, we will have the opportunity to discuss novels with our fellow classmates and to respond to the literature in writing.

Materials for Class

You are required to bring the following items to class every day. Once you have entered the classroom, you may not leave the room without permission. Therefore, I urge you to come to class well prepared.

1. 1 inch binder with a packet of 5 dividers (this binder should be for Reading Seminar only!)

2. white lined paper for the binder

3. pencil or pen

4. an independent reading book

5. Homework (if assigned)

Homework

Your assignments will be given to you in class verbally, as well as posted on the whiteboard in my room. Homework will also be posted on this website. It is your responsibility to make sure they are written in your assignment book. All assignments will be explained completely in class. Homework is expected to be done neatly, completely, and to the best of your ability. If any assignment is late or incomplete, it may or may not be counted for half credit. If an assignment is not turned in, you will receive zero credit. If you have questions, or would like help with an assignment, it is your responsibility to make arrangements with me. I am available for homework help in ALL subject areas during most 9th periods. Please make arrangements with me in advance so that I am sure to be available to you. There may be some times where I call a mandatory study session during a 9th period.
