My name is Mike Burrell and I am your child’s health, wellness and fitness teacher at Shoemaker Elementary. I want to welcome you to my website and let you know that I’m looking forward to getting to know your child better in class while encouraging him or her to enjoy being physically active. My number one priority in class is the health and safety of your child. To aid in that effort, below are a few reminders that will make physical education classes run safely and smoothly. I appreciate your support of these rules.
- Students will need sneakers for physical education class. The sneakers should not be slip-ons or have heels or wheels.
- Students must wear appropriate clothing on days that they have phys ed. Clothes should be loose fitting and comfortable. However, if phys ed class falls on picture day, Halloween or another special occasion, exceptions will be made to this rule.
- If your child is unable to participate in phys ed class, please send a note along explaining the situation.
The phys ed curriculum covers a variety of fitness units, traditional games and cooperative activities where students master basic and advanced skills through movement. Throughout the curriculum, effort and sportsmanship are the qualities that I stress. I will also be teaching a six-lesson health curriculum to your child during the school year. These lessons are as follows:
1st grade: Drug Education (medicines and poisons), Nutrition, Environmental Safety
2nd grade: Drug Education (physical & behavioral effects of drugs/emergency situations), Nutrition, Safety (“Rules of the Road”)
3rd grade: Drug Education (tobacco), Nutrition, Muscular and Skeletal Systems, Safety (heat-related safety issues)
4th grade: Drug Education (tobacco, peer pressure, addiction, alcohol), Nutrition, First Aid
5th grade: Human Growth & Development, First Aid, Heart Rate
I am attempting to make a strong connection between the physical education and health curriculum so that students can clearly understand the many benefits of an active lifestyle. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. My e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org. Or, I can be reached at 610-965-1626 (extension 33007). Thank you.
