           Welcome to First Grade!        
Mrs. Saylor’s Class – Room #208


1.  Supplies Needed For First Grade
Each child will receive pencils, folders, scissors, glue, a pencil box, and other supplies from the school.  Please do not send trapper keepers/big binders or mechanical pencils to school with your child.  Your child will need a backpack to carry his or her belongings to and from school each day.  Also, please make note of the needed items from the “Kicking Off A Great Year In First Grade!” list.  Please remember to label your child’s belongings with his or her name and room number 208! Thank you!

 2.  Snack Time
Each afternoon we will have a short snack time.  In first grade we eat an early lunch and often the children are stating they are hungry midway through the afternoon.  This can distract from their learning so we will have approximately a ten minute snack/quiet work period.  During this time, we will listen to a story read aloud or complete quiet seatwork.  The children will need to bring a small healthy snack with them to school each day.  I encourage nutritious snacks such as pretzels, crackers, grapes, carrots and celery sticks, etc.  Please do not send a drink in with your child.  They will be able to get drinks from our classroom water fountain.

3.  Birthdays
Children love to celebrate their birthdays with others!  On or near your child’s birthday, you may send in a healthy treat for the whole class.  As a school district, we encourage healthy birthday treats or other special items, such as birthday pencils to be distributed by the children to their peers.  Please make sure to let me know a few days in advance so that I can inform you of the correct number of students in our class.  For those children who have birthdays in June, July, or August, arrangements can be made to celebrate and acknowledge their birthdays at other times throughout the school year.  Again, please contact me in advance.

4.  Lunch/Recess
The first grade lunch/recess time is 11:15am to 12:00pm.  Each child will receive a S.N.A.P. card.  You may send in a check or cash to deposit into your child’s S.N.A.P. account for use.  Please remember to send the check or money into school in an envelope with your child’s name and room number 208 on it!  Thank you!  The children will need to pack a lunch from home or buy from the cafeteria every day.  Milk can be purchased separately for those children with a packed lunch.

5.  Book Club Orders
You will be able to purchase books for and with your child each month through SCHOLASTIC Book Club orders.  I will send home book orders once a month.  I offer the book orders as an additional source for parents and caretakers to find and purchase books age and reading level appropriate for their children.  Often, the school and/or I will purchase books for our classroom library from the monthly book orders!  Please fill out the order forms completely and return them to school with the correct amount of money by the due date marked on the order form.  Please enclose the order form and payment in an envelope with your child’s name and room number 208 on it.  You may also place your order directly online.  Directions for this procedure will be sent home with the first set of book order forms.  Thank you!

6.  Our Expressive Art Classes

Monday:  Health/Wellness/Fitness Class – Please wear sneakers on all Mondays!!!

Tuesday:  Library Class – Please remember to send your child’s library books back to school with them each Tuesday so he or she may select new books for the following week!
 
Wednesday: No Expressive Arts!  
 
Thursday:  Art Class – Please bring in a smock for art class! 

An old, oversized t-shirt will serve the purpose.  Please send in your child’s smock labeled with his or her name and room number 208 by Friday, September 9th.  Thank you!  

Friday:   Music Class – Come ready to sing!!!  


7.  Homework
First graders have approximately fifteen minutes of homework each night.  Assignments will differ from night to night. 

There will be no homework on Fridays!

Additional reading practice at home is always recommended!
** Homework Helper Books:  Each day your child will bring home his or her Homework Helper book.  During each school day, we will record that night’s assignment in the appropriate place.  It is your child’s responsibility to make sure he or she has all of the books, folders, and/or papers needed to complete the assignment.  I will always aid the children with this process.  Please check your child’s Homework Helper book each night for his or her homework and/or reminders from me.  After completing his or her homework, please check the quality of your child’s work and sign in the marked box.  It is very important that you sign your child’s book each night after viewing his or her assignments.  The Homework Helper is a great tool for keeping the lines of communication open between home and school.  


8. School Attendance
School attendance is a key to success in school!  It is also required by school law.  If your child is absent due to illness, please complete a “Note to Teacher” form and return it to school as soon as possible.  If you are planning on taking a family trip, please notify the school in advance and complete a form explaining the nature of the trip, as well as the dates your child will not be in school.  All trips need to be approved by Mr. Best!  If your child is tardy, please report to the school office before coming to our classroom.  Please go to the office with your child when he or she is tardy or send a note into school with him or her stating the reason for tardiness.  If your child is to be dismissed early from school one day, please notify me in writing on that day or before hand.  Please pick up your child in the school office.  Do not come to the classroom.  The secretary will notify me when a parent or guardian is here to pick up his or her child and I will direct your child to meet you in the office.  Thank you!  

9.  Home/School Folders
Each night your child will bring home his or her blue Home/School folder.  The papers placed in the “Home” pocket are for you to review and keep at home.  These papers may include informational material from the school or myself and/or completed school work by your child.  Please take the time to review these papers with your child.  He or she has taken great time and effort in completing his or her work.  We want to ALWAYS encourage them to take pride in ALL their work!  In the “School” pocket you will find papers such as permission slips and field trip forms which you will need to fill out and return to school, as well as daily homework assignment papers.  Please check the folders each night with your child; emptying out those that stay at home and completing those that need to be returned to school.  Thank you!

10. Book Buddies
Each week we will have time allotted (approximately a half an hour) in which we
will work on a variety of reading activities with Mrs. Caiti’s third grade class.  At this time, we may also create crafts in correlation to some of our studies in reading or in honor of a special holiday.  We may also work in teams on a variety of cooperative learning activities or play a new game.  Our time together with the third graders will help us become better readers, build our confidence, and have lots of fun!

11. Labeling All Articles
Please write your child’s name and room number 208 on all articles brought to school!  Throughout the school year, many items become lost and go unclaimed in the Lost and Found.  Labeling all of your child’s items can prevent this from occurring!  Thank you!

12. School Times
The school day begins at 8:55 am and ends at 3:30pm except on our Wednesday Early Dismissal.  Early dismissal will occur at 1:30pm.  If you need to drop your child off at school in the morning, please do so between 8:40 and 8:50am.  When picking up your child at the end of the day, please meet him or her at the flagpole at 3:30pm (1:30pm on Wednesdays).  On days of inclement weather, the meeting spot is in our school lobby.  Dismissal will be to the assigned bus unless I receive a written notice detailing the change.
