Homework
Homework assigned in first grade is used to reinforce skills and strategies learned in school. It is also an important part of learning organization and responsibility. Most often homework assignments will be math, spelling, or language arts, and should take your child about 10 minutes to complete. Please let me know if your child has any difficulty completing assignments. Homework should be returned to school the next day in their homework folder. Homework is not graded.
Reading
Please encourage reading on a nightly basis as well. Students reading independently as well as with an adult are going to improve listening skills, reading fluency, and comprehension skills through discussion. Best of all, reading on a nightly basis fosters a love of reading!
Homework Buddy
If your child is going to be on vacation for one day or more, please let me know in advance and I will gather assignments and send those home for your child to work on. In addition, if your child is absent from school due to illness or other reasons, it is helpful to know of a “homework buddy” to send assignments home with. The homework buddy can be a sibling, a friend or a neighbor. If you don’t have a friend, neighbor or sibling who lives close by, you can always opt to pick up assignments at the school office that day by 4:00 pm. Please fill out an index card with your child’s name on the top line. Then, write one or two “homework buddies” on the card and include their grade level and room number/teacher (if known)and return to me. I will arrange for the homework to go home with that person for your child. If you don’t have a buddy, just write “pick up at school” and I can send work to the office if you call for it. Thank you!
