MATH

ALGEBRA

The children will be working with a program called "Hands-on Algebra."  It's designed to make algebra problems less abstract.  They use manipulatives to actually show the problem - including how to simplify the problem. They will be expected to demonstrate in class HOW to solve a problem using the manipulatives.  They will soon move away from this and will figure out a way to solve the problems just using pencil and paper.

Challenge Problems

The children will be receiving some "challenge, problem solving papers."  During class, the students will have time to demonstrate to each other how they attacked the problems.  It's interesting for children to see so many ways to solve the same problem.  It's important to continue these explanations because even if they know how to solve the problem, we want them to be able to communicate how this was done.
